Welcome, and thank you for visiting UL’s Safety Smart website!  Our goal is to help each of you live a safer life and to understand what you can do for yourself, your family and your friends to understand some of the dangers that lurk all around us, and how you can avoid putting yourself at risk.  The more you know, the safer you’ll be, so that you can show everyone you know “I Am Safety Smart”!!!

My name is Gus, and I’m the Public Safety officer at Underwriters Laboratories.  What does that mean?  Well, for more than 100 years our company has devoted itself to safety, driven by what we call our public safety mission.  This mission is to promote safe living and working environments for people through the application of safety science (and yes, as you’ll learn here safety IS a science) and hazard based safety engineering.  My job is to help our company stay true to this very important mission, and to also help us bring it to countries all around the world.  In order to do my job I need to visit all kinds of places to work with companies who want to make safe products, and to meet with people who are safety experts.  Each month I’ll share with you some of the places I’m visiting, the people I’m meeting, and the kinds of things I’m doing to help make the world a safer place.  In fact, at UL we say that we’re “working for a safer world” every day of the year.

I also want to hear from you on my safety blog.  Let me know what questions you have, what you would like to hear about, or share with me the things you do to live a safe life.  I’ll always do my best to share my thoughts with you, and to help you any way I can.

Now, what’s my very first message to you?  Well, simply, it’s that safety starts with you!  We all have a responsibility to behave in ways that donot put us, our friends or our family, in any type of danger.  The only one who can control what you do to keep yourself and those around you safe – is YOU!  Learn about safety, behave safely, and teach others how to be safe and, just like UL, you’ll be helping to make the world a safer place.
