April 2012 - Playground Safety
  • Make sure an adult is always present when playing
  • Always check playground equipment before using it. If it’s broken, make sure an adult is aware and don’t play until its safe.
  • There should always be some type of soft landing below the equipment. Sand, rubber mats etc.
  • Always use both hands when you climb, sit when you swing and never walk up the slide.
  • Be responsible and have fun!
March 2012 - Bike Safety
  • Adjust your equipment to fit you! Your helmet and your bike should fit you properly.
  • Never take your eyes off the road, stay alert at all times.
  • Always have an adult with you and riding in the same directions as the cars.
  • Always keep both hands on your handle bars and both feet on the peddles.
  • Never ride at night. If you must, make sure you have reflectors on your bike, helmet and wear bright colored clothing.
February 2012 - Dental Health
  • Brush your teeth 3 times a day - and do it in a circular motion rather than just up and down.
  • Brush your teeth for 2 minutes. Use a timer if you have trouble keeping track of the time.
  • Flossing is just as important. Try to floss every day, but don't be too rough, this can hurt your gums!
  • Eat right. Avoid sugary drinks and snacks to keep your teeth stay strong.
  • Make sure you replace your toothbrush every couple of months.
January 2012 - Financial Wellness for Kids
  • Money is earned by working, and the amount you make is based on how much work you do.
  • To earn money help neighbors with yard work, shovel driveways, help your parents with chores, and more.
  • Start a savings account with your parents bank or save at home with a piggy bank to help with spending later.
  • Create a budget that tracks what you earn and what you are spending!
  • When you buy something, make sure it is something you will really use and enjoy.
December 2011 - Read New Book
  • Challenge yourself to learn a new word for every day of this month.
  • Clean out your backpack.
  • What land do you want to travel to? Read a book about it.
  • Read a book to a friend or family member.
  • Write a short story about your favorite movie.
November 2011 - Good Nutrition
  • We all know eating whole grains are good for us but did you know that popcorn is a whole grain? So go pop some today.
  • Exercising is part of staying healthy.
  • Brushing your teeth twice a day is a healthy habit to get into.
  • Oatmeal is an excellent choice and good whole grain!
  • Don't forget the vegetables! Try a bright orange carrot stick or how about a celery stalk with peanut butter, or you could go for the giant brussel sprout!
October 2011 - Fire Prevention
  • Remember that matches and lighters should be used by adults only.
  • Make a fire escape plan with your family and practice it!
  • Heat and smoke rise, if you see or smell smoke get down, get out, and stay out.
  • Always remember to blow out candles when leaving a room or going to sleep.
  • Tell your parents to make sure at least one smoke alarm and one carbon monoxide alarm are installed on each level of your home near sleeping areas.

  • Remember that anything you put online or post on a site can stay online forever, even if you try to delete it.

  • Try not to swallow water while you're swimming.
  • Water is a natural resource so we should always conserve it.
  • Save water by turning off the faucet when you are brushing your teeth.
  • Use refillable water bottles instead of buying bottled water.
  • Keep your water safe by not throwing trash in lakes, oceans, or ponds.
July 2011 - UV Safety
  • Don't forget to hydrate while you are outside in the sun.
  • Sunscreen protects you from the sun, and keeps you outside having fun!
  • Reapply sunscreen every two to three hours.
  • Even if you're going to be in the water you still need sunscreen.
  • Use sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays
June 2011 - General Safety
  • Never meet an online friend in person without your parent's knowledge or permission.
  • When riding in a vehicle remember to put your seatbelt on and remind everyone else to do the same!
  • Never post your personal information such as telephone number or home address on a Social Media website.
  • You know how to stay away from dangers,remember that includes suspicious strangers.
  • Swim with a buddy!
May 2011 - Electric Safety
  • If you're outside and you hear thunder or see lightning, it's time to go inside.
  • To unplug, remember to pull on the plug and not the cord.
  • Cords should not be run under furniture or rugs. Tell an adult if you find one.
  • Stay 3 feet from the heat that means fireplaces, space heaters, ovens and camp fires!
  • Water and electricity don't mix- they never have and they never will!
April 2011 - Youth Sports Safety
  • Make sure you're wearing the right helmet for your sport.
  • Practice good sportsmanship!
  • Warm up your muscles with some stretches before you start playing.
  • Know the rules of the game. When players know the rules of the game
  • Don't play when you are injured.
March 2011 - National Nutrition
  • Fresh foods are better choices than packaged foods.
  • Calcium builds bones and teeth- so drink a glass of milk today!
  • It is best to eat foods of all colors. The more colors and textures in your daily meals, the better range of nutrients you'll get.
  • Healthy eating does not have to mean giving up foods you like best, just learn to balance the food choices you make.
  • Be healthy smart and eat piece of fruit with breakfast.
February 2011 - Heart Health
  • When deciding what kind of bread or pasta to eat- choose 100% whole wheat!
  • Be a good role model to the people around you by making healthy eating choices and getting regular exercise
  • Fresh fruit with some low-fat or fat-free yogurt is a great way to start the day
  • Your heart is a muscle, so exercise it! Take a walk, go jogging, jump rope and remember to have fun!
  • Have a heart- celebrate by hugging the ones you care about!
January 2011 - Stay Healthy
  • Spend at least an hour a day exercising, you can ice skate, snowboard, skateboard--you get the idea!
  • Try to get between 8 and 10 hours of sleep per night.
  • Remember to sneeze or cough into your elbow, shoulder, or tissue.
  • When playing sports, don't forget your protective gear.
  • Brushing your teeth twice a day is the best way to avoid cavities.
December 2010 - Good Nutrition
  • You can make smart choices by eating lots of fruits and vegetables.
  • Get Active! Run, play, and have fun!
  • Don't wait too late to hydrate, 6-8 glasses will do it a day.
  • Make healthy choices when snacking.
  • Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day!
November 2010 - Hand Washing
  • Hand washing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of germs.
  • For germ free hands, wash for 20 seconds under warm running water.
  • If you accidentally sneeze or cough into your hand, make sure to wash your hands immediately so you don't spread your germs.
  • It is really important to wash your hands after playing with animals.
  • Set your water temperature to "cold" on your clothes washer.
October 2010 - Fire Safety
  • Never put anything over a lamp like clothes or a blanket
  • Never play with matches, lighters, or candles.
  • Remember to change the batteries in your smoke alarms this month.
  • Help your family come up with a fire escape plan
  • When escaping a fire, get down, get out and stay out!
September 2010 - Food Safety Tips
  • Wash your hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds before and after handling food.
  • Never place cooked food on a plate that previously held raw meat, poultry and seafood.
  • Rinse fruit and vegetables with running tap water before you eat them.
  • Do not buy or use cans that have been dented or that are bulging.
  • Refrigerate leftovers and do not leave foods out at room temperature for more than two hours.
